Paul's Web Space 2.1

Politics, Culture, Technology

Stories about cool events I've attended, musings about social media and other technology, and commentary about people, issues, ideas, whatever. I've had a web site since 1994, at my own domain since 1997, and switched it to blog format in 2005. Now, in 2008, I've added labels, shuffled things around a bit and fixed some style and UI quirks - hence 2.1. Watch for more widgets and microformats....

Community Metrics; Interesting Bloggers

First, I need to blog more. How can I understand or manage these sorts of activities without really experiencing what's involved. Also, I'm hoping to write more IRL, so this becomes good practice...sort-of in between email and a newspaper article. Finally, I'm trying to understand and measure our audience more effectively (read on).

I've been working or interacting with some really interesting bloggers as well as thinkers on how this whole social networking enterprise works, affects the world, and is best utilized for an organizations needs. At the NTC, I met and received good advice from both Beth Kanter and Andy Carvin. And at a gathering called the Web Manager's Roundtable I was introduced to John Bell, who has very perceptive observations about how this media should and shouldn't be used effectively by organizations to fulfill their mission.

John wrote a recent entry in his blog on the measurement of social media, and I believe there will be a roundtable meeting on the very same topic. This comes on the heels of an interesting survey and conference call hosted by Forum One Communications, on this very topic. The whole field is in its infancy, but there are some very bright minds working on the problem right now, and I hope to play a role in this enterprise as we roll out more community platforms at edweek.org.
