Paul's Web Space 2.1

Politics, Culture, Technology

Stories about cool events I've attended, musings about social media and other technology, and commentary about people, issues, ideas, whatever. I've had a web site since 1994, at my own domain since 1997, and switched it to blog format in 2005. Now, in 2008, I've added labels, shuffled things around a bit and fixed some style and UI quirks - hence 2.1. Watch for more widgets and microformats....

Pete Seeger: The Power of Song

I just saw the most amazing movie at opening night of the AFI/Discovery SilverDocs Film Festival - Pete Seeger: The Power of Song. It reminded me what a true hero Pete Seeger was, a tireless organizer for the less fortunate or causes he believed in like peace, an honest advocate for freedom of expression, freedom of belief, the freedom of politics that he believed (like I do) is a cornerstone of our great country.

I've seen Pete perform several times, including the Great Hudson River Revival over 25 years ago, my first folk festival. This was also the first time I ever saw not only Pete Seeger, but Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt, and countless other wonderful musicians, as I was introduced to folk and bluegrass music — for the first time that it really moved me. To see everyone from Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Joan Baez – to countless other fellow travelers and folklorists – chronicle his story, going back to the great depression, was a marvel, and made me appreciate so much more what a beacon of light and hope this artist was.

If you get the chance to see this amazing story of a true American hero, GO!
